Horses are not and never will be machines – but this to me is something to be celebrated, it’s an essential part of the beauty of dressage because truly beautiful harmony is so fragile, so delicate, a constant conversation between horse and rider that shows we are always learning and experiencing with them and we’re never ‘done’ training or achieving. How dull dressage would become if every performance were just a repeat of faultless perfection!
To me, enjoying dressage is not about perfection and nothing less, it’s also a journey that is never finished, a profound relationship between horse and rider which is enriched by every ride no matter its quality as a performance. How much you can learn from watching closely that journey in its more difficult moments as well as the brilliant – it’s proven in the popularity of videos like the one with Zizi Top and HansPeter. I’m not disappointed to see Anky have a tough ride – she and Salinero are like an old married couple who talk every day – sometimes the conversation involves raised voices and disagreement, but it’s what she does next and how he responds which is so fascinating. Likewise for Totilas to have errors – this is not a failing, its an insight. He is so young still and I want to know who he is, see how he develops and how the journey between him and Edward progresses.
I watch top competitions because it inspires me not just with high scores and beauty, but encourages me to remember the learning journey. It takes highs AND lows to make such a fascinating, complex art! ”
