Andrew Figures – Winner of Radio’s ‘Horses in the Morning’ – 2010’s Most Eligible Bachelor

Andrew and Twister

Nominated by: Cheryl Figures:  Looks like it’s time to do some PR for my candidate, Andrew Figures. Andrew has been training and competing in Dressage since he was 6. He had to earn his lessons either by getting good grades or doing chores, nothing could make Andrew knuckle down like dangling a riding lesson. Now as an adult nothing has changed he works hard to earn a lesson from his trainer Karin Reid Offield . Andrew goes from cleaning stalls, to riding horses, to teaching students, mending fences, stacking hay, and so on, if it needs to be done he does it… his days are long but his smiles never stop.  www.horsesinthemorning.com

Introducing Sweden's Blingh Blingh

NOTES FROM A SWEDISH BREEDER:

“My mare, Brindisi, is a pretty big filly, about 174 cm. For my choice of a stallion for her I was looking for a stallion that is not so tall and also with a lot of thoroughbred element. My choice was therefore Lingh. The father of Brindisi is Briar and then comes Jaguar – Pompe.

Mother, Brindisi in Action

I bought Brindsi when she was three years. She is a mare with very good trot, canter and has good rideability.”

Memorial Day 2011 is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.

Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on Memorial Day.

From a friend of Eddie’s….”During that 12 months I was at Fort Riley, Ed lived down the hall from me in the Bachelor Officers Quarters. He was dating a girl from Kansas State, and talked me into dating one of her sorority sisters, in part because I had a four door sedan which could be used for double dating. We had a good time.
If I remember correctly, we both move to the Wildcat Apartments in Manhattan, Kansas in early 1965.
Like me, Ed was interested in filling his obligation to the Army and then moving on in life. I asked him one time what he thought he would do after his service and he stated he was thinking about teaching English or becoming a lawyer.
I was serious impacted when I heard about Ed’s passing.
I think of Ed often”
Eddie went to Deerfield Academy and Yale….more about those years later. Enjoy your Weekend and Honor our fallen men and women.  KO

GLOBAL DRESSAGE FESTIVAL IN WELLINGTON, FLORIDA 2012

“We are going to embark on something that I think can create a great platform for dressage in the world, in this country, in this county, and in this community. We’re going to try to put forth that effort with great enthusiasm and I believe you will see a transition here that will be vast and complete as you saw in the hunter-jumper world,” explained Bellissimo CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) and Managing Partner of Wellington Equestrian Partners (WEP).

Six-time dressage Olympian, Robert Dover expressed his excitement for this new endeavor, “This is a dream come true for the sport of dressage. We are now standing on what I believe will be a venue that cannot only rival, but better Aachen in Germany, which is the finest show in the world. I believe that we will end up having a series that will be able to gain the finest series of shows for dressage in the world.”

“To be able to participate in and support the sport of Dressage as a founding partner during these decades is the highlight of my career. I am so proud of everyone’s effort to make this a reality.  We need everyone that loves Dressage, and loves horses to contribute what they can afford and join the journey. To ride and coach in these spectacular arenas in the middle of the action of the Winter Equestrian Festival will be the goals of young riders, amateurs, young professionals and seasoned campaigners. We will be inviting the Europeans to America, to Dressage shows we will be very proud to call our own !  I want to thank Mark Bellissimo and all his team for this contribution to American Dressage history. ” Karin Reid Offield adds.

5 year old Dressage Prospect, Bright-lingh and his young rider, Kaylie Tammerijn in Holland

INTRODUCING RIDER – KAYLIE TAMMERIJN

A PROFILE OF A TWENTY YEAR OLD YOUNG WOMAN AND HER 5 YEAR OLD LINGH

DRESSAGE PROSPECT,  BRIGHT-LINGH.  { Lingh x May Sherif x Urban }

My name is Kaylie and I’m 20 years old. I sat on a horse even before I could walk. My mother had her own horse and she always brought me with her to the stable. I went along to competitions and during the week when she was training. When I was 6 years old I got my own pony. In the beginning I was very scared but that was until my parents told me that they were going to sell her. From this moment on I put my fears aside and I started to enjoy it. Finally I also went to competitions but then at the age of 14 I grew too big for my pony.

Meanwhile I was also riding my mother’s horses and the horses at the stable where we had our horses stalled. Then, out of the blue, we received a mare. It was said she was dangerous and they wanted to have her killed. The mare had been abused and was scared when you touched her and when you sat on her she would rear all the time. My mum knew the horse and decided to take her to see if the mare could regain confidence and trust. My mother and I were riding her and it went very well. After a while she trusted us and we could do anything we wanted to do with her!

In 2005 we had her inseminated. The choice was difficult but we decided to choose Lingh as the father. In this time Lingh was ridden by Edward Gal in Grand Prix and they were winning a lot. The way Lingh is build suits our mare and in May 2006 our boy was born. Bright-lingh it was!

Bright-lingh, born in 2006

As a foal Bright was one of the 20 selected Lingh offspring for the show at the stables of Edward Gal but unfortunately he was limping that day. When still a foal, Bright went to Portugal and when aged 2.5 he went back to Holland. It was time to start working with him.

Bright-lingh paying attention !

The owner of our stable was doing it for me since I had no experience. He was not the easiest but after some time we rode him for the first time. It was kind of strange because we waited 3 years for this and all this time I was only able to watch him grow up.

Bright-lingh is a quick learner and when he trusts you,  he does everything. He really does a lot for you but he does let you know when he has difficulties doing certain exercises. Now we also compete in dressage and it goes fantastic. He is a little nervous but he doesn’t let it show. You can only feel it when you are riding him. In the beginning it felt a little scary, as if he could explode but now I know how to relax him. When he takes a deep breath he is relaxed. I really love his character!

Bright-lingh and Kaylie, trying hard and looking great !

Besides dressage we also have jumping lessons. It is not really my thing but he gives a great feeling especially because he doesn’t stop. He has a great canter so you can easily ride him in the course. He is almost 5 years now and never lets me down. I absolutely adore him!

Up and Over ! First times jumping....

This summer I have no special plans yet. If I choose to stay in Holland I will ride the outdoor selections to see how far we can make it. But on the other side I’m thinking about going to work in Portugal at the dressage academy of Daniel Pinto. If this is possible it would be a great experience for me and Bright. I want to make it as far as possible and hopefully we end up riding high level. I mean, you breed a horse and train it yourself and then reaching high level would be a dream coming true!

The favourite part of owning a young horse is that you have to teach him everything. As I said Bright is very cooperative and this feels wonderful. I have known him since the day he was born and then seeing him grow up and finally being able to ride him gives a wonderful feeling and a very strong connection.

The horse connection of Kaylie and Bright !

In the stable Bright is very kind. I always have a certain whistle to call him. When he hears this, or when he hears my scooter, he immediately raises his head to see where I am. Then when I come in he is always happy to see me, putting his ears straight up and moving around his upper lip.  When putting on his bridle he always throws his head towards me. At first I thought he was just being rough but this is his way to let me know that he wants to be cuddled. Bright is a very playful horse, when he is free in the arena he loves to follow you around. He just loves attention and interaction. The people at my stable call him a clown. He has a special facial expression as if he is always fooling around and being happy. That is what I think makes him so special.”

April 24th, an Easter and Birthday Celebration ! Easter Video from Lingh and Karin…

Dear Friends, Here is a video for you from Lingh and me….enjoy and have a wonderful day !!

Happy Easter from Karin and Lingh

I have always loved Easter – its a great family day and a time of celebration.  I am not one to be big on celebrating my birthday but this year I couldn’t help but notice that Easter and my birthday were on the same date.  I have always known that Easter fluctuated according to some complex calculation and could be as early as March and as late as late April but I don’t ever recall Easter being on my birthday.  So a fellow birthdayman did some research online to understand how the Easter date was chosen each year.
The calculation for Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the equinox – i.e. March 21st.
So the latest a full moon could occur after the 21st of March would be 28 days later – that would be the 18th of April.  If that were a Sunday then the first Sunday after that would be the 25th which is the latest possible date for Easter. So April 24th is almost the latest Easter can ever be. On the other extreme.  If the first full moon was the 21st and that was a Saturday then Easter could be as early as March 22nd.
The last time Easter was on April 24th was 1859 and it won’t happen again until 2095.  Those of us born on the 24th of April still maintain our objective of living to 100 but as optimistic as we remain we do not hold out hope of reaching 133 so…..let it be said that Easter and my birthday occurring on the same day is truly a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Happy Easter to you all.

How the Easter Date is Determined

The Easter date is set around the time of the vernal, or spring, equinox, when the length of day and night is nearly equal in every part of the world. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, according to Christian belief.
Setting the Easter Date
Twice a year, around March 21 and September 23, the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal everywhere in the world. These two days are known as the vernal (or spring) equinox and the autumnal equinox.
The vernal equinox also coincides with Easter and the holidays that are related to it. They are moveable feasts that do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars. The dates of many Christian holidays depend on the Easter date. Some of these holidays include Palm Sunday, Holy or Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Ascension Day and Pentecost (also called Whitsunday).
In the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus’ death and resurrection occurred around the time of the Jewish Passover, which was celebrated on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Early sources showed that this soon led to Christians around the world celebrating Easter on different dates. At the end of the second century, some churches celebrated Easter on the day of the Passover, while others celebrated it on the following Sunday.
In 325CE the Council of Nicaea established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. From that point forward, the Easter date depended on the ecclesiastical approximation of March 21 for the vernal equinox. Easter is delayed one week if the full moon is on Sunday, which decreases the chances of it falling on the same day as the Jewish Passover. The council’s ruling is contrary to the Quartodecimans, a group of Christians who celebrated Easter on the day of the full moon, 14 days into the month.

Comparative calendars

Although the Council of Nicaea established the Easter date for churches around the world, not all Christian churches observe Easter according the Gregorian calendar. Some churches still observe Easter under the Julian calendar.
The Gregorian calendar was created because the Julian calendar was slightly too long. With the Julian calendar, the equinox date moved towards the earlier dates of March and further away from the Easter. Therefore, the introduction of the Gregorian calendar allowed for a realignment with the equinox.
According to the Gregorian calendar, Easter falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 from 1753 to 2400. In the Julian calendar, used by some eastern or Orthodox churches, Easter also falls on a Sunday from March 22 to April 25, which in the Gregorian calendar are from April 3 to May 10 from 1753 to 2400.
In 2008 Easter Sunday falls on March 23 in the Gregorian calendar and on April 27 in the Julian calendar, when converted to the Gregorian date. In 2007 Easter fell on the same date (April 8) in both calendars when the Julian date was converted to the Gregorian date. This happens in some years, such as 2004, 2010 and 2011.
Table 1, below, shows the earliest Easter dates in both the Gregorian and Julian Calendars from 1753 up until the year 2400. The Julian calendar dates are converted to the dates shown in the Gregorian calendar.

Proposed Easter Date Reforms

There have been a number of suggested reforms for the Easter date. For example, in 1997 the World Council of Churches proposed a reform of the Easter calculation to replace an equation-based method of calculating Easter with direct astronomical observation. This would have solved the Easter date difference between churches that observe the Gregorian calendar and those that observe the Julian calendar. The reform was proposed to be implemented in 2001, but it is not yet adopted.
Another example of a proposed reform occurred in the United Kingdom, where the Easter Act 1928 was established to allow the Easter date to be fixed as the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April. However, this law was not implemented, although it remains on the UK Statute Law Database.

Easter 2008 was the Earliest in nearly 100 Years

For the first time in nearly 100 years Easter arrived at its earliest on Sunday, March 23 in 2008. The last time Easter Sunday fell on March 23 was in 1913. However, Easter can occur earlier than March 23. The earliest Easter ever recorded in the Gregorian calendar from 1753 onwards was on March 22, both in 1761 and 1818.
The next time Easter occurs on March 23 will not be until 2160, and a March 22 Easter will not happen until the year 2285.

Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable feasts, in that they do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars (both of which follow the cycle of the sun and the seasons). Instead, the date for Easter is determined on a lunisolar calendar similar to the Hebrew calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere’svernal equinox.[31] Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March 20 in most years), and the “Full Moon” is not necessarily the astronomically correct date.
In Western Christianity, using the Gregorian calendar, Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, inclusively.[32] The following day,Easter Monday, is a legal holiday in many countries with predominantly Christian traditions.

A dream within your reach, a ride of a lifetime! Imagine yourself on a world – class top horse, the probability to make this dream come true is as low as choosing the correct six numbers in a lottery. Yet now is your chance and yes it is possible!!  The opportunity is upon you and Karin Reid Offield has made it possible with three simple words, “Yes we can”.

A very lucky reader of St. Georg has an opportunity to mount the World Cup Reserve Champion and World Games Dressage Team Silver medalist, Lingh, formerly ridden by Edward Gal.  Karin, Lingh’s owner, will travel from the United States to Europe for this very special event and give riding instruction to a very lucky winner.

What do you have to do to be able to ride Lingh? What we need from you is a 90 second video where we can see you riding and a brief explanation of why it should be you winning this incredible opportunity. Besides the training hour on Lingh, the winner will also be offered a tour of the Birkhof Stud and a family meal together.

Of course, an editor from the St. Georg will be there to capture the event on film!

Send in your video and letter to foto@st-georg.de. We will put  videos on-line and then there will be a vote by our readers. A jury of experts and Karin will review the reader’s choice of the best ten videos and then the jury will select and invite the lucky winner. Not a reader of St. Georg ? International entries will be accepted.

Gutes Geling(h)en !

The new dead line for entries is June 20th.

The Ride on Lingh™ will take place the 5th week of September at Gestut Birkhof, Donzdorf, Germany.

Buying a horse, a thank you letter from a client!

Dear Karin, I hope this letter helps you in your journey as a Dressage instructor and horsewoman.

Recently, my husband gave the green light for me to buy a dressage schoolmaster.  I was thrilled beyond belief.  How many women could be that fortunate?  My trainer, Karin Reid Offield, was very happy for me.  The difference between a pro like Karin; however, and the little amateur me, is that I was thinking with my heart and Karin was thinking with her head.  Having bought and sold many horses in her lifetime, including the fabulous wonder boy Lingh, Karin knew it would take a while to find the right horse for me.  I announced that I was going to Wellington, Florida for the month of February in search of my horse.  I think Karin was nervous that I would traipse off and buy the first horse that flashed its big brown eyes at me.  Now, came the time when a wise, dedicated trainer stepped in.  Even though Karin was leaving for Europe on business, and to visit Lingh, she immediately said, “I’ll meet you in Wellington the first week of February and fly in directly from Germany.”  I couldn’t believe my ears.  How many trainers would do that for a student?  Karin began a fast and furious month of contacting professionals she knew and trusted in the Wellington area and we were off and running.

When Karin arrived in Wellington, she called me immediately and said, “Have you got your riding clothes ready?”  I hesitantly said, yes and her response was “Great, because I’ll meet you at the Tackeria at 8:00 a.m. sharp tomorrow.  We will be riding and trying horses all day.”  That turned out to be only the first of many days of riding beautiful, highly trained dressage horses.  As we visited each stable, Karin would tell me the background of each horse.  The other trainer or owner would ride the horse first so we could both watch it move.  Then Karin would ride the horse, all the while talking to me and telling me what she was feeling.  When it was my turn to ride the horse, Karin gave me a sense of confidence and also little hints as to getting the most out of the horse.  When we left each farm, we took notes as to the positives and negatives of each horse.  Karin , early on in the game realized that no matter how wonderful a horse was, it had to pull resoundingly at my heartstrings.  Throughout the entire process Karin encouraged me and was very positive.  No matter how many horses we tried (and we tried quite a few) neither she nor I was discouraged.  I secretly had a feeling that the right horse would be in Florida.  One day Karin announced that someone was bringing an Intermediare I Schoolmaster down from Northern Florida for us to try.  When I first saw Rising Sun I knew she was something special – and so did Karin.  After riding the beautiful mare for two days we both did a high five and smiled and laughed the rest of the day.  This was the easiest horse transaction I have ever undertaken – thanks to Karin and also to Kate Etherly.  The vetting was set up by one of the top equine vets in the country, Brendan Furlong, all the way from New Jersey.  Karin and her staff followed up with all testing and x-rays.  I never had to worry about shipping – all was taken care of for me.

Throughout this whole procedure, Karin really cared about me.  She wanted to keep me safe and find a horse who could help complete my dreams.  With Karin, I have not just a trainer – I have a true friend.

I must also say thank you to a wonderful woman and former owner of Rising Sun, who was sweet, honest and truly in love with her mare.  Thank you for parting with the girl who now has won my heart.  I wish you well as you continue your travels in the world of dressage, Nancy Hutson.  You obviously loved this tremendous mare very much as it shows in her loving nature.

A big thank you to Mary Ann Grant and Carol Grant for helping so much in Wellington and a big hug and laugh to Marcel for all of our fun antics.

Sincerely, Nancy Anderson

The winner is...Rising Sun and Nancy and me (Karin ) ...I am thrilled to ride this horse everyday, helping Nancy learn to ride !

In Scotland…the Horse and Hound Results ! Lingh filly wins…

with a 71.57 in the Novice Freestyle to Music and a second scoring a 69.39 in the Prelim 19

Dear Sam, I am so pleased to hear how your Busilus is progressing. When ever these horses come to us with issues and challenges, it is up to us – our patience and our resolve to teach the horses not to be afraid.  It sounds like you are making steady progress. Congratulations on being mentioned AGAIN in the Horse and Hound…..it suits you !!   All the best, Karin

Dear Karin “Busilus has qualified for the BD Winter Championships by coming 2nd in the Preliminary class and winning the Novice Freestyle to Music at the Winter Regionals.  Very excited.  She is coming along really nicely and I am aiming her at Young Horse Classes this year! ” Sam

BACK STORY.…I believe the Dam to be a KWPN mare called u-to-s who was by Sandro Hit.  The mare I bought is called Busilus.  She was bred in Scotland by Sue Gale of Tullynessle Stud,  although the embryo transfer was done by the Animal Embryo Centre in Holland in late May 2005.“We purchased Busilus as a timid and quiet character back in October 2009 as a three year old, she was unbroken and unhandled and seemed very sharp indeed.  Due to the very hard winter in Scotland we were unable to start her training until the end of February but my what a fantastic horse she is turning into.  She very quickly turned into a quiet, trusting and very affectionate horse.  Within 2 days of handling she was catching and tieing up, having her feet picked up.  Right away we knew that she was going to be extremely intelligent.  Within a couple days of the long reins being introduced she was being long reined around the roads and tracks of the estate where we live, totally unphased by anything.  I have produced quite a few horses now and have never had one with such intelligence that is so keen to learn and please.  She really seems to love her work and when the time came to back her she was so quiet… a far cry from the filly we first saw back in October.  She is so trusting too and what a cheeky wee character she now has.  She just seems to love her work and has a great attitude, I think she will be a fantastic dressage prospect with the brain she has.  She gets alot of love and affection and I know that she too loves us and enjoys her new home and life… as soon as we go outside she comes over to the yard to see what we are doing…. so inquisitive.  I cannot wait to start riding her properly, she is the most exciting prospect I have ever had !” Sam
