Buying a colt, by Karin Reid Offield
I have never done this before. Never thought I would. But I did. He left his home today. He will arrive at my barn tomorrow. This is the email I received today.”Hi, Merlin is on his way, loaded ok but not happy to be leaving, he’ll settle down soon… LOL He’s been off grain for the last week while I was gone so you can start him back on whatever feed you like. There is a bare patch on his right hip that is slowly growing back hair, I think it was from the betadine irritating his skin when we laid him down to geld (there’s one on the inside of his right rear leg, too, same thing, same time). Other than that he is looking good and has healed up nicely from his gelding, no problems I know of, my neighbor said he was fine all week and seemed ok today to me. I had his feet trimmed two weeks ago so he shouldn’t need anything for a while. Karin, he has never cross tied, I don’t like those things, so if you guys do that at the farm just be aware he’s not done it before. He’s never heard or seen clippers, either, I don’t own any. Thanks !” So, I am going to write a diary about this dear sweet youngster. I hope it will be fun, with lots of good tales and not much sadness. I live really far North without the compliments of vets and blacksmiths I have been so used to while riding in the FEI level. Join me on this trail and I look forward to getting to know Merlin, along with you. I will attach each entry to this one, and if it gets interesting I will make a section for it on the website.
The Arrival: Who knew…I would have never imagined trying to catch a youngster in a trailer. It happened today ! Merlin was shy. He had traveled 24 hours with a 4 year old stallion who kept him awake for most of the journey. The stallion was dropped off at 4 am, Merlin settled allowing the drivers to rest quietly, for 2 hours after that…then they traveled on to Northern Michigan arriving at BreknRidge at about 11:30. We were patient and about 30 minutes later, Merlin quieted and allowed the handler to take him by lead, and he stepped off the truck and went willingly into his fresh stall. He stayed inside and rested, drinking water and enjoyed his 12/12 salt block and some hay. Welcome MERLIN !
Catching, brushing, walking, and staying safe for all of us is the name of the game this week. He’s gentle, then shy, then excited, then wary, he is a million things to each person that is now in his “new world !” Today he walked in and out of the round pen, unaccompanied by his buddy Twister. He was a good boy, then the sprinklers went on…yipee. More pictures and stories soon….
WHY BREED TO LINGH ? 'Bright – Lingh' April 2010 update
Bright – Lingh was born on February 22nd 2006. Today is a strong and gentle sport horse for his young rider / owner. I visited Kaylie and took a video of him in the fall of 2009. He looked super that day, in his paddock and today he looks even better, more mature and confident under his rider. He is stabled at a nice stable in western Holland, not too far from anywhere – that’s why we love Holland ! Good luck this summer with your boy !

Bizar la Haya – Born 4/30/06 Lingh Colt in Germany !
WOW It’s a spring day in Germany, in the region of Bedburg-Hau. Sired by Lingh out of a mare by Roman Nature. “In 2005 at the Netherlands National Dressage Championships we were astonished by the amazing performance of Edward Gal with Lingh and decided to breed our Roman Nature mare to Lingh. The next year …. our first stallion Bizar la Haya (sire Lingh) was born. Like his mother Bizar la Haya quickly grew out to be a horse with a very nice size and model. As a two year old he already looked like a full grown stallion and it turned out that his character was superb: easy to handle and an enormous drive to work for you under the saddle.”
As breeders they are looking to breed foals that have certain qualities – especially power in the hindquarters…..
“Take Lingh, both his father Flemmingh and his grandfather Columbus were good jumping horses. If you breed the current modern dressage horses with a great front to a mare with strong hind quarters, talent for collection, a drive to work for you under the saddle and an athletic body you will breed a horse that can perform at Grand Prix level.”
Here are 2 photos of Bizar, outside on a spring day in Germany !

Congratulations !!!! The Winner is……
There were 4 judges. Tish Quirk of Carlsbad, California and Kathy Hickerson of Brookline, New Hampshire. They represented the American jury of Breeding Experts. The European panel consisted of Claartje Van Andel of the Amsterdam Area, Netherlands, Public Relations and Communications Expert and Maucca Karki of the Almere Stad Area, Netherlands, Breeder and Equestrian Entertainment Expert and Consultant.
The winning stories will be published simultaneously in the WEG Edition this September of the Horse Connection Magazine, published in Colorado and on-line at Dressagedirect.com
Writers sent in multi lingual submissions, stories and poems about the passion of Breeding. The judges were sent each entry without knowing the author’s name or background. Karin Reid Offield, the owner of Lingh, was the data technician who accepted and distributed the anonymous submissions to the judges. Karin was not a participant in the judging. The contest began February 19th 2010.
“It was an amazing experience for me. I can count on one hand the foals and mares I have had in my career. Now, because of this contest I have had a front row seat in all these amazing stories. Most were non fiction and all of them celebrate the world of breeding horses – what happens, how it happens, when it happens and the effect these gentle creatures and their babies have on us, our psyche, on our hearts and how we have to be, the human race as thick skinned as any animal lover is….our big big horses are so fragile, but it’s all about the adventure…the dream. This Lingh Story Contest celebrates this world ! I want to congratulate every entrant and I will be calling them all this week. I have special plans for the stories. You will have to wait until later this summer to read the winners stories, and until then I plan on showcasing all of the contestants stories each month on my website. ” Karin explains.

Second Place Winner Ann F. Talley Her story is entitled “What If?”
Biography: “I am an adult amateur currently competing at the local level at 2nd Level dressage with my 16 yr old Appaloosa gelding. I have been with the same trainer for over 20 years and she has seen me through a variety of breeds. Her philosophy has been to take each horse to their max, whatever that might be. I’ve scribed at numerous BLM and other championship competitions and have developed a good eye for what is “correct” as far as movement, gaits etc. In 2005 I was honored to watch Lingh in what I considered a truly magnificent performance. I still get goose bumps just thinking about it.
I worked as a police officer for 25 years, but recently had to step down from being an active officer to that of a police dispatcher due to having my hip replaced. Although I am no longer able to meet the physical demands required of an officer, having my hip replaced did enable me to get back to riding – pain free. The goal this year is to move into Third Level with my Appy. My dream has been to one day have a horse that is bred for the sport of dressage, and be able to move up to at least Prix St. Georges.
The story I wrote is true. It is not fiction. The filly I speak of was indeed my hope and dream of an upper level horse. Her sire is the son of Royal Prince – who has Weyden on his dam side. I saw Weyden at the 96 Olympics – thought he was wonderful and dreamed of a foal with Weyden in the pedigree for years. But when I saw Lingh in Las Vegas, well, he simply blew me away. The filly’s dam is out of the Hanoverian G-line going back to Grande. So you can see why I would dream of a breeding to Lingh for her. Alas, it was not to be. I really did lose her to colic. But I do still dream of a Lingh foal. And I hope the day will come when I can see Lingh in person again. A truly magnificent stallion such as he, is not easily forgotten, but is indeed, fondly remembered as the all time highlight of all things Dressage.”

DELAY IN ANNOUNCING WINNER OF STORY CONTEST
Hi Everyone, I have a slight delay in the winners announcement. There was an earthquake in California, Easter, changing of schedules …please be patient, I will announce the winner of the Lingh breeding as soon as possible, hopefully by tomorrow night. My apologies for missing the announcing deadline….
I want to personally thank the writers who submitted the most amazing collection of stories and poems. Your efforts and passion are obvious, it makes me feel so grateful to be able to share the world of horses with you. If your story does not win the grand prize, now being critiqued by four judges, I would be honored if you would consider to do business with me and Hassler Dressage here in the United States. Susanne Hassler is ready and willing to discuss all your needs to help you decide to choose Lingh as the father of your next foal. In Europe, I will advise the different Stallion Agents of your interest in Lingh. I want to offer a breeding discount to all of the Story Contest entrants. Details will be announced in a few days.
Thank you, Karin
HAPPY EASTER TO ALL FROM LINGH AND INTRODUCING 'FALINE LINGH' IN SANTA YNEZ, CALIFORNIA
AN EASTER SURPRISE AND CONGRATULATIONS TO CATHERINE and FAMILY ….
Faline is a doe in Felix Salten’s novel Bambi, A Life in the Woods and its sequel, Bambi’s Children as well as in the Walt Disney movies Bambi and Bambi II. Her mother is Ena. First shown as a fawn and later as an adult doe, Faline’s role is as Bambi’s friend and later mate. Faline was featured as one of the guests in Disney’s House of Mouse.
Bambi is a 1942 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the book Bambi, A Life in the Woods by Austrian author Felix Salten. The film was released by RKO Radio Pictures on August 13, 1942, and it is the fifth film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.
The main characters are Bambi, a white-tailed deer, his parents (the Great Prince of the forest and his unnamed mother), his friends Thumper (a pink-nosed rabbit), and Flower (a skunk), and his childhood friend and future mate, Faline. For the movie, Disney took the liberty of changing Bambi’s species into a white-tailed deer from his original species of roe deer, since roe deer don’t inhabit the United States, and the white-tailed deer is more familiar to Americans. This film received three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Best Song for “Love Is a Song” and Original Music Score.
Faline Lingh’s grandsires are Ferro and Roemer. (Her sire is Darwin who made a splash in Europe briefly i believe but died of colic before he became better known. She is Dutch all the way! Born in Canada. I got her at 3 through one of my mentors, Charlotte Bredahl Baker, and one of Charlotte’s sponsors in Japan. Registered name is Wraine Dancer, born in a “w” year on a rainy day apparently, i write it as Rain Dancer to be more clear, but unfortunately that spelling not official. She is now 6 coming 7. Her nickname is Willow.
Note from Karin. Catherine’s Lingh colt Ellinghton died this winter. You can read about this very brave colt in New News some months ago.
Interesting Ellinghton was the spitting image of Lingh in all ways, color, bone, and movement. Faline Lingh looks to be a carbon copy of Rain Dancer, on the other hand, and is incredibly frisky and bold at just a few hours old, she really strikes me as incredibly powerful and game (at birth!) for such a refined, doe-like creature. She is named after the beautiful doe (fawn?) in the book Bambi. I expected her to be fawnish-red bay like Ellinghton and Lingh, hence the name. Looks like she will be a dark red bay though. Still she will always be my little deer. 😉 she is so gorgeous. Flawless conformation, perfect legs, they don’t even need to thaw-out/unbend, straightest foal legs in the world! These legs should be photographed for posterity. Could not be more perfect all over. Incredible shoulder angle. Dainty pretty head. C
GOOD LUCK TO ALL BREEDERS ON THIS SPECIAL DAY,
MAY ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE !

WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU FOR WINNING THE WORLD CUP !!
