A Christmas Reminder
REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeers retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.
Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.
We should’ve known… ONLY women would be able to lead Santa Claus in his beautiful red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost !
History of Flyinge…the Blacksmith Program is amazing
Flyinge was founded in 1661 and it is situated in the south of Sweden near the city ofLund. Flyinge is the largest and best-known breeding station in Sweden and one of the world’s oldest active National studs dating back to the 12th century. There are about 170 full time students in four educational programmes; an upper secondary school programme in equine studies and natural science, a vocational training programme for the education of young horses, a farrier training programme, and in cooperation with Strömsholm and the Swedish University of Agriculture a two year university programme in equine studies. There are four indoor arenas and stables for about 200 horses. Flyinge is the site for many yearly events in dressage, show jumping and breeding.
The farrier/blacksmith educational program is the latest addition at Flyinge. Since 2009 the national educational programme for blacksmiths in Sweden is located on Flyinge and Wången (our partner in the north of Sweden, near Östersund). The financing is from the government (the Ministry of agriculture and from the Swedish university of Agriculture). They have about 45 students per year. The blacksmith students must have at least 6 months practice when they start their education at Flyinge. Then there is 40 weeks in school, with supervised practice, or business of their own, for one year before they get their final exam.

Denmark Visit
In getting to know the breeding market in Denmark I had the privilege to travel with the WBFSH, the World Breeding Federation for Sporthorses into Denmark. We traveled to Ask, Blue Hors and Stald Cajus. Stald Cajus was our last stop on a trip that lasted from 5am from Lund, a drive into Copenhagen to the beautiful hotel downtown and then we loaded onto a large bus for a trip that took us home again about 9 pm that evening. It was a fantastic trip filled with breeding, horses and new acquaintances. Denmark is fantastic and I hope to meet more breeders there as Lingh becomes better known to the mare owners. I will keep adding photographs to this site of our trip ! I want to thank ASVH for the invitation to join this excursion.
Louisville Headed Home to Holland
Offield Farms’ KWPN stallion Hexagon’s Louisville/Burgraff will be returning to his birthplace before the end of the year.Louisville will stand at stud in the Netherlands at Stal Hexagon and have the opportunity to directly influence the mare base of that region and other parts of the Europe. Hassler Dressage has been proud to manage Hexagon’s Louisville over the past few years and we will dearly miss his charismatic presence and enormously kind nature in our stable every day. We appreciate how much it will mean to Louisville’s breeder Leunus van Lieren to have Louisville retire at ‘home’ and to have the opportunity to produce more top offspring like Hexagon’s Wonderella and Hexagon’s Welnetta, both top mares which have shone for their sire Louisville in international sport. Hassler Dressage will continue to manage mares to Hexagon’s Louisville through frozen semen. ” I am really excited that Louisville will return to Holland. I have watched his babies grow up in Holland, and there are a couple older colts here in the US. I am thrilled that Louisville passes on to his mares his incredible character and work ethic. He was, after Lingh, my favorite ride, as he was as light as a feather, as steady as the Rock of Gibraltar and the MOST FUN HORSE TO RIDE I EVER HAD ! I want to thank Mike Etherly for helping me purchase him, we must have seen 50 Grand Prix horses on that trip and it was at Stal Hexagon that we saw Louisville for the first time. I encourage any breeder to look at him carefully for their mares.”
LINGH COLTS PRESENTED in Holland in December…..cross your fingers !
I just received the details of the stallions for the first inspection. Herewith the details of the Lingh stallions. Nice detail, all Lingh stallions are still owned by the breeder. So the breeders are probably really pleased with their breeding products.
Lingh is a great choice when choosing a father for your future foal.
To breed a top horse is a breeder’s dream. Lingh leaves his fantastic
type and fine character to his babies. Lingh represents generations
of top performance breeding and is suitable as a stallion for most
types of mares.
Any photos or impressions of these events will be most appreciated !
Good luck everyone !
A few words from a Swedish breeder …
I live a little bit out to sea on the beautiful island of Gotland. I live there with my family and our horses. . The climate here is mild and pleasant with the sea around us. Growing here are truffles, grapes and other more exotic plants. The ground is a foundation built on limestone.
The horses benefit from these lime-rich conditions and become strong individuals. During the summer and late autumn our horses are fresh grazing outside, around the clock, in large pastures with trees that provide protection from the sun.
My two broodmares have both shown that they really belong in the breeding box. They have provided excellent offspring of mother nature, just as we want them.
In the spring 2009, I learned that Lingh would come to Sweden to be available to our Swedish mares. Immediately he became a very hot candidate for my fine mare Weltmeyer – Prince Thatch xx – Legat, a popular German tribe where I wanted to get some Dutch blood. In addition, there were further back in Lingh thoroughbred’s pedigree and this fact made my interest in Lingh even greater.
After the Swedish Warmblood Association test, when Lingh was approved, I sent an email to Karin to congratulate her and to show my interest. Karin replied back personally and everything felt good. It was great to also be able to see pictures of Lingh’s offspring with each mare on Lingh’s website.

It is very important to me because the pictures of the offspring show further what qualities Lingh passes on. His fine temperament is also spoken widely of from several quarters. He is a really nice horse say those who have visited him and those who handle him in everyday life.
Unfortunately, it was then that Lingh due to an upper respiratory infection had impaired semen quality and Flying decided not to send out any semen during that period. Since I had no way of transporting my mare with her newborn foal to Flying, where Lingh stands for insemination, I switched to another stallion.
News that Lingh now will remain at Flyinge for the next breeding season came as a pleasant surprise. In all likelihood, I will choose next year Lingh for BOTH my mares. He should also fit in very well with my Swedish mare also. She is from the very popular stallion Bernstein who left countless competition- individuals and approved stallions. Just look at the Swedish Young Rider Championships in dressage one month ago, and Bernstein was the father of the three first placed!!
My breeding objectives are to produce nice, well pedigreed and good moving horses. I follow up my offspring’s continued development to ensure that my chose of the stallion is consistent with the plan I have in my breeding program.
I think Lingh with his bravura has shown what he can for the dressage world, and now it’s time to use the coveted blood on our mares. Vi i Sverige är lyckligt lottade som får ha honom här… In Sweden we are fortunate to have him be here …
Vänliga hälsningar Best regards

This Swedish Show in Stockholm WAS great !
Congratulations to Owe Sandstrom for his brilliant showmanship ! more photos to follow…some video too !
Owe was the mastermind behind the Abba Show, his genius is what puts The Stockholm Extravaganza on the Map ! It consists of hundreds of horses, ponies, children, cowboys and artists…all doing what they love – putting on a show with their horses !
Owe Sandström was born 1944 in Sundsvall, in northern Sweden. His day job is being a teacher at Spånga High School just north of Stockholm, his main responsibilty being their unique zoo department with all kinds of animals.
Parallel with the interest in natural science and the world of animals, Owe also had a passion for clothes design. During the 1970s he designed most of ABBA’s costumes together with his partner, Lars Wigenius, in the firm Artist Dressing. One well-known example of his designs is Agnetha and Frida’s yellow and blue cat dresses. The white jumpsuit with green and white cape, as worn by Agnetha on the 1974/1975 tours and in the ’Mamma Mia’ video, is another recognisable item. This was the costume that helped Agnetha acquire the tag ”sexiest bottom in pop music”. Owe’s spandex costumes in shades of blue, purple and white, used during the 1979 tour of Europe and North America, also occupy a prominent place in the visual memories of ABBA. Owe is still a teacher and designer today. He also enjoyed a couple of years as a famous television personality when he was the animal expert in the Swedish version of the popular game show Animal Crack-Ups.

BEST ADVICE: BREED TO LINGH EARLY IN THE BREEDING SEASON
Fresh Semen Available at Flyinge Export Station
Karin Offield and her internationally celebrated dressage competition and breeding stallion Lingh announce their intention to stay at Flyinge, the National Stud of Sweden, for a second season of breeding. Karin talks about Lingh and the New News.
“I was thrilled when I was asked if Lingh could stay for another season of breeding at Flyinge. Lingh will clearly benefit from their newly expanded, export qualified breeding station. It’s a modern accommodation that will enable Flyinge to ship fresh semen to neighboring countries in the EU. Additionally, at Flyinge’s new collection facilities, they have the capacity to produce frozen semen under quarantine conditions to meet various countries’ import requirements. Frozen semen has become more mainstream with many vets and breeders-good news not only for expanding a stallion’s market internationally but also especially for those stallions who come under heavy demand with their local markets. We have strong international interest for Lingh’s services and are delighted to begin to meet that market. Lingh is currently in the breeding shed producing frozen semen for New Zealand and Australia.”
“To put Lingh’s 2009 breeding performance in clear perspective: he produced an excellent 87.5% pregnancy rate! Only a few mares of the whole group he covered did not get pregnant as expected. Exciting and encouraging too for Lingh breeders is the fact that many of the mares that are now in foal are older dressage mares that were never bred before. It’s nice to be able to say that Lingh made a lot of breeders very happy this year!”
“Amidst the chatter about Lingh’s semen quality last season, I’d like to share the details to separate out fact from rumor. When Lingh arrived at Flyinge last season we began freezing him for the USA market, Holland and Finland. His semen was excellent and the breeders were very pleased with the results, with confirmed pregnancies using that frozen semen. When he got a cold and his motility dropped to a level that Flyinge reported was no longer acceptable to ship to his large number of booked mares, Flyinge asked mare owners to ship their mares in to Flyinge for breeding. At this time, nine mares were bred at Flyinge and 9 got pregnant at Flyinge. Flyinge also managed to ship off a few doses of cooled semen to 10 mares in Sweden during this time and of those 10 mares, 8 are pregnant. We lost most of the April and May bookings to these circumstances. I can say that the teams of reproduction experts at Flyinge are excellent, the transport is well executed and they will continue to manage Lingh to top results, hopefully producing an even better pregnancy rate than 87.5% this season.”
“I have been pleased with the ongoing care and consideration of Lingh’s best interests at Flyinge.” He had recovered nicely from his stable injury that occurred during the winter of the USA selection trials. Rest and rehab took place while Karin was training at Anky’s in Holland. In late fall, Lingh arrived in Sweden and Edward Gal gave Lingh a super ride for Swedish audiences during the Flyinge Stallion Show. That was quite a night! Over the winter Swedish rider Mattias Jansson was keeping Lingh fantastically fit, spending many hours riding in the woods and tracks and trails around the stables. Mattias and Lingh traveled through Sweden last spring with the Flyinge Stallion Show, meeting breeders and performing for the big crowds that came to watch and learn about the famous stallions in the Flyinge program. Then, late this summer, Lingh hurt his foot so I said, ‘let’s turn him out, pull his shoes and give him a long rest’. He now enjoys his time in a big paddock everyday. His overall health and his stallion duty all seem to agree with him. He loves his time outside and for a stallion whose competition career has always come first – he is now enjoying the best life at Flyinge”
“Flyinge has done a lot for me. As a stallion owner, there are many choices and decisions of directions to take. The management of Lingh at Flyinge has been simple, clear and profitable. I am encouraging mare owners to pay attention to Lingh, what his young offspring are achieving and to use Lingh now during these prime years of his life for breeding! The common thread I hear in my conversations with the Lingh breeders is how special, easy going and nice it is to handle his foals. The offspring have long legs; they appear well balanced with good front ends. They also have a lot of elasticity and an engine in their movements – all qualities we want for dressage horses and sport horses.” Karl Henrik-Heimdahl, Flyinge’s Breeding Director responds saying, “Lingh is suitable for most kind of mares.”
“The best advice I can give for mare owners outside the Scandic area is to breed to Lingh early in the spring season. The new Export Station can accommodate those early requests easily. ” Karin concludes.
